TAG: Reader Problems

Friday, 14 November 2014
Hi, there! We found this tag on Tumblr and we thought that the questions were really original so we decided to fill it up with our own answers as it was an interview (as if...).

All credit to the creator of the original tag by About To Read on Youtube.

No need to say what W.F and S.O stand for. Enjoy!

  1. You have 20,000 books on your TBR. How in the world do you decide what to read next?
W.F: Okay, I take TBR means "to be read". I'm slightly prone to using patterns when I face situations like this so I would deal with the list the easiest way: the first I added —the oldest on the list— that would be the first I read.
S.O: I just read whatever I feel like to. Really. I don't stress too much about what to read. Specially if I don't have a deadline for it, which I don't since I finished my degree —yaaaay!— but I do stress out if I have too much to read and I don't feel like reading any of it or, on the contrary, if I want to read it all.
  2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you quit or are you committed?
W.F: That's a really hard one, specially because I'm not very committed when it comes to finish stuff. I don't know, it depends on the level of "just-not-loving-it" which, for me, translates into how many days/months it's taking me to read a book. If it's been more than two months and I still haven't finished it, forget it.
S.O: Well, it really depends. Sometimes I keep reading because, even if I'm not loving it, I really want to know how it ends. Some other times, I'm like "can't be bothered" and quit reading. In the end, I'm reading just for fun so why do I have to keep reading something if I don't like it?

  3. The end of the year is coming and you’re so close, but so far away on your Goodreads reading challenge. Do you try to catch up and how? W.F: That's why I don't do reading challenges. You're supposed to enjoy it and unless it's your job and you get paid for it, you shouldn't rush it. But in case I would have put myself into the position of having to rush it I would just quit. Too much pressure.
S.O: I reduce my reading challenge. Is it cheating? I don't care. It's my challenge, therefore I can decide how it should be, no? That's what I did last year, actually haha. This year, though, I have extended the challenge twice already because I'm reading a lot more.

  4. The covers of a series you love do. not. match. How do you cope?W.F: Oh, God. I'm pretty OCD with these things. It happened to me with A Song of Ice and Fire, I was given the first book as a present and then I had to buy the rest myself so not only the covers but the size of the books were different as well. What I did was buy the rest of the series in the same store and at the same time (including the first one so all of them were even in every single way). As I said, OCD and broke because of that.
S.O: I'm also a bit OCD about this. That's why I bought HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban in Spanish a few months ago even though I already had it in Catalan because it didn't match. But I also have two series in which the first book is not the same size as the second one and it bothers me a little bit. However, I don't get very obsessed over it.

  5. Everyone and their mother loves a book you really don’t like. Who do you bond with over shared feelings?
W.F: Okay so... I'm not really sure I understand this question. But not to like a book that everyone's loving happened to me quite a lot of times. But I always share my opinion honestly and regardless of the fandom.
S.O: If I don't like it, I won't read it. Therefore, I don't have to talk about it with anyone. I just don't really talk about books I don't like. I just talk about the ones I do like.

  6. You’re reading a book and you are about to start crying in public. How do you deal? W.F: Oh, well. I love a good crying when reading a book, but I don't think I would be able to cry in a public space. Not over a book at least. I need my own "aura", my quietness, my peaceful background. Can't get deep into a book if I'm surrounded by people.
S.O: This has happened to me twice this summer when I was reading at work (don't worry, I'm allowed to do so) and I tried to hide it and act casual. Luckily, there weren't much people around.

  7. A sequel of a book you loved just came out, but you’ve forgotten a lot from the prior novel. Will you re-read the book? Skip the sequel? Try to find a synopsis on Goodreads? Cry in frustration?!?!?!?W.F: The first thing that comes to my mind is re-read the book, but I'm sure I wouldn't be able to finish it afterwards so I would eventually buy the sequel and pray to catch up with what I don't remember...
S.O: I would buy the sequel. I would re-read the prior one and then read the second one. I don't see where the problem is here...

  8. You do not want anyone. ANYONE. borrowing your books. How do you politely tell people nope when they ask?W.F: It's true, I do not want anyone borrowing my books because they NEVER give it back. And that's something I'm capable of killing over. Like, seriously. But I am such an idiot that I wouldn't say NO. And then, that would happen. They would borrow it and they would NEVER give it back. And that's the story of how I'm stuck in this vicious cycle.
S.O: I don't mind borrowing my books and I also don't mind asking them back if I think they have had it for what I think it's too long. I used to be quite shy about it but then I thought "
why would I? it's my book and it's my right to ask for it". Obviously, I'm not rude or anything when doing so but try to ask nicely if that person has read it already and, if they have, I'll ask them to return it to me. That reminds me, I have to ask the friend I borrowed The Maze Runner if she's done with it next time I see her.

  9. You’ve picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over your reading slump?W.F: I'm actually fine with the slump. Sometimes you just need to take a break, even though reading feels so good, sometimes you just need the break to take interest in other stuff. With creative people like me, I can't be stuck only with reading for a while, I always have projects in my head and I have to give them some time too.
S.O: I haven't read a word since I started my days off last week and today's the first day I have picked up the book I'm reading. I'm pretty fine about it. Sometimes you're in the mood to read, sometimes you're not. As I said before, I read for fun so I don't think it has to be an obligation (not anymore! yay!)

  10. There are so many new books coming out that you’re dying to read! How many do you actually buy?W.F: I don't really books anytime soon to when they come out —unless it's a series and I'm waiting for it, in that case I just buy one at a time. Because basically, as I said, I'm real broke.
S.O: I hate bookdepository and its nice prices so much. I also have a long wishlist on its web. I buy too much though it doesn't depend on new books coming out but in the ones I feel like reading at that specific moment.
